[Skydrive] Allow entire folder (with subfolders) upload

Submitted by eye on March 8, 2009 to Usability

Right now we can upload multiple files at a same time just by select files and "drag and drop" into the web page!

But we can only upload files, not folders.
If someone need to upload an entire folder with some files and subfolders inside, first you need to select and upload the files, then wait for upload finish... then open the subfolder, upload files inside, wait for upload finish, and repeat it over and over again for all subfolders you need to upload.

I think that would be nice, very useful, simple and faster if we can upload entire folders (with subfolders and files inside) mantaining directory tree.

Ability to upload entire folders with files and subfolders inside, maintaining directory tree. (maybe desktop application for SkyDrive will be necessary)

This is a great idea.

You could, of course, put everything in a zip folder and upload that. But that isn't a great idea.

This is of course a great idea (So +1) but the thing is, its not really possible with browsers. When you select a file to upload, the browser sends the file itself and all its contents to the site/server, but it cannot do that with folders. The server itself would have to be able to scan the folder for all the files (and folders, then recursion would kick in ;]) but browsers do not do that, because it probably just plain wouldn't work, but also if it DID work, a server could almost request any file off your computer, and take it.

@jeremysbost@hotmail.com:
Yeah, it's a workaround, but zip folder will require a lot more steps =d

@aldo:
You are right, isn't possible with browsers, but I think that you could do that using ActiveX (IE only), please, correct me if I'm wrong.
A desktop app for SkyDrive would do this just fine.

Changed solution description.

@eye Yeah, I would totally welcome an application for SkyDrive, though I would welcome the ability to mount it as a virtual drive even more :-)

I am not using "live" service for for long time. (No time, Blocked at office.....)
But I remember when I was uploading the photos on MSN spaces, it has facility to download some control. where after installation (one time) you can see desktop folders and you can choose files in diffrent folders at time.
And i am not sure but it was creating sub folders if you select the files inside it.
and that time it was the best thing than all other websites.

ADrive allows multiple folders to be uploaded at once. It seems that SkyDrive ought to be able to do the same.
