another way around emoticons

Submitted by bflatbush on March 11, 2010 to Annoyance

Cartoon emoticons replacing typed emoticons automatically on windows live mail.

I found putting an extra space in between the colon and parenthesis will not convert to the irritating emoticon on windows live mail. So instead of :) try : ). It still looks good! I'd still like Windows mail to give us the option of turning off these cartoons which I will never use in my email.

Note, however, that you can just hit Undo (Ctrl+Z) to turn the emoticon back into a plain text one.

But this isn't really discoverable, so you're right, this would be a good thing to have in the options menu, for example, a checkbox for "Use plain text for emoticons", turned off by default.

Or allow backspace to 'undo' the transformation into an emoticon.... just like Word.

But yes, an option is required. Give the user control.
