Windows Live SkyDrive within Windows Explorer?

Submitted by AlexB on March 6, 2009 to Annoyance, Usability

To add or download files from SkyDrive you need to login and add/download files from within a web browser.

You should be able to natively add/download files through Windows Explorer. It would also be good if support for folders was added as well.

Skydrive is a really great idea, but it really needs to be easier to use, and more integrated with Windows itself (as well as with Windows Live applications). Using it needs to be more transparent, and having friends access files there needs to be easier (even for friends who don't use Windows). This would be a good start!

Never going to happen thanks to the EU.

DavidTaraso wrote on March 7, 2009, 10:01pm

Actually, what am I saying? As an integrated feature, never going to happen. But as a download... this would be great.

I've wanted this for so long now... None of those crappy third-party alternatives work properly either. :-(

jamiet wrote on March 8, 2009, 4:31pm

Absolutely. I think the best experience would be the ability to add SkyDrive as a mapped drive.

P.S. Isn't there a 3rd party add-on that does this already?

I blogged about my idea for this a while back See http://tinyurl.com/7hfxwp for my thoughts.

If microsoft wanted to support this via 'Add a network place' in XP/Vista in 'My network places.. it could be via a custom URI there, or even attach a 'Web Share' to skydrive's backend..

That would work for me, I oftern use FTP sites in that way.. http://homepage.ntlworld.com/bininside/tutorials/explorerftp/ for an example of use if anyone hasn't seen its built in fuction already.

This is probably just a screen scraper which is why they don't tend to work well. The API is not public yet. I hope it someday is.

People have been working for/wanting this for ages back when Folder (I think thats what it was called before SkyDrive) was like only 5 megs in size. I'm sure MS knows we want it, but nothing says we can't be a squeeky wheel.

Microsoft is known to do this sort of shit. Hopefully wave 4 will be promising..

If they integrate Mesh with Skydrive they would have this feature plus sync. I hope that's the route they are going.

I can confim that Gladinet works like a charm with the latest incarnation of SkyDrive.

FremyCompany wrote on April 7, 2009, 3:48pm

I really would like to have this feature !

Great Idea. Just perfect really.

Great idea. I really want my explorer & applications to have access to all my storage resources. The web access, while nice, is a still a barrier to real usability.

Lundtoft wrote on May 21, 2009, 5:52pm

You can use http://www.gladinet.com/ to solve this problem, it works great.

aldo wrote on August 29, 2009, 8:16am

As Lundtoft said, you can use something else to solve the problem, but SkyDrive shouldn't need anything extra to make it work, so +1.

I've found wonderful shell extension that provides all SkyDrive functionality within Win Explorer!

I would advice against using SkyDrive Explorer.
Why? Simply because it's a piece of trash!
Has lots of bugs, has broken functionality and the lame thing about it is that it's not even in a beta stage... they actually call it final!

Lundtoft, is spot on, on the other hand!

bernard wrote on February 19, 2010, 10:29am

It's happening. Skydrive, Mesh, and Sync will all be integrated; they're announcing it at MIX10, according to Ray Ozzie. Mesh as a brand is going away, but its functionality will be assimilated into Skydrive (replacing Live Desktop) and Sync (replacing the Mesh client).
