Improve Share on the Live Toolbar

Submitted by mjflynt on July 31, 2009 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Usability

The Share button on the Live Toolbar allows the user to share a webpage with the entire public. It posts updates to every contact in the persons network. Sometimes a shared page is only pertinent to a small set of contacts. For example, a technical article is something I might only want to share with friends that I know would enjoy it. Or a political page that I would like to share but only with like minded folks. Since we can create any number of Shared Favorite folders and limit the visibility of the share to those we choose via permissions and categories, it would be nice if the toolbar helped us here. Currently, to add a shared favorite to one of these folders required that we manually add all the required information in the form on the page were we add the favorite.

Add one more field to the form that displays when you click the Share button. This field will default to everyone or public or just "Shared Favorites", but it will be a dropdown menu that also lists each of the other user defined Shared Favorite folders you have created. Selecting one of those folders will place the Shared Favorite in that folder instead of the default folder allowing distribution only to those people with permissions to see it and display an update in the Whats new feed for only those people who are able to see it. Also the What's new on my Profile wil only show this update to the select chosen few instead of anyone who views my Profile page.

This would greatly expand the usability of the Shared Favorites feature making it possible to share your favorite amongst different categories of people. For example, I have a Twitter group to limit twitter updates only to certain friends. If I wanted to share a news article about twitter being purchased by Google then I should be able to "Share" the page, add a comment, and select "Twitter users" (I defined this category) and then only these friends will see this article. And everyone else will not be annoyed by the update since they aren't using twitter anyway. Or I may want to share an article with just conservative friends or liberal friends etc.
