[WL Photo Gallery] Beige colour cast when viewing images

Submitted by cowdozer on June 12, 2009 to Bug

NOTE: This problem is actually caused by an incorrect colour profile. See the comments below or the following similar Windows 7 Taskforce link:

The original submission text is still included below to help others find a solution:

-----------------------------------------------------------

The beige background of Windows Live Photo Gallery (WLPG) behind images changes the overall colour of images being viewed. They are given a beige hue.

Colours are correct in Library view as well as during Slide Shows.

This problem also exists in the Vista-included Windows Photo Gallery.

Taken from the Windows Live Photo Gallery blog:
Q: Why do my photos have an odd color cast in the Photo Gallery (but look fine in the XP Picture and Fax Viewer and IE)?

The photo viewer in Photo Gallery is a color managed environment (it can use a color profile to render a color-accurate representation of your photo). The XP Viewer and IE (and many other applications) are not color managed. Color management can be a complex topic. It's possible that there is an incorrect color profile embedded in the photo, or perhaps you have an incorrect color profile applied to your display device. Following these instructions may fix the problem:

1. Control Panel->Hardware and Sound->Color Management
2. Select your display device
3. Check the box “Use my setting for this device”
4. Click Add
5. Choose “sRGB IEC61966-2.1” (this is the color profile that IE is using)
6. Set it as default.

Yeah this always annoyed me. @nyp: I oddly can't switch to Category view. Are you referring to the Color options menu in the Display control panel (XP)? I chose the only profile which starts with "sRGB" but I don't know if it works because only sometimes or after a certain point of time/action this bug occurs.

Here's the instructions for Vista/7:

But if you're running XP, then I have no idea. I don't even think XP has Color Management...
