[Messenger] Default "new message" sound is annoying
10-year-olds cell kiddies may say otherwise, but the default sound played when a new message is received dates back from the XP era and, thus, is aggresive, loud, irritant, and overall annoying. It chains badly (when receiving multiple messages in rapid sucession).
The stock alternatives are no better ("Alien" is the least distracting of the lot, but doesn't quite cut it either). The "Incoming Mail" from Vista is my current choice, but it's not stock, it's not available in XP (yawn), and I'd like to differentiate a mail from an instant message. And, of course, when all your co-workers use the default, it doesn't matter too much what you do, you'll keep hearing those annoying 4 notes (did I say it's loud?).
So, it may be almost a trademark sound, marketing may love it, but it's time to let it go. Or at the very least include an alternative that passes the Vista Guidelines.
Bring Robert Fripp and the gang from Vista back to the studio. Or use one of the remains.

Lol, I'm 14 and even found the sound to be annoying!
I changed the sound to one used in 7/Vista, a nice little jingly sound that makes me want to read the convo, and not go "urghh, there goes that annoying sound again!"
Sorry for that little colloquial passage I just wrote, but that's how it is.
Hopefully they change it!
+1
aaaaaaaaaaaa!!! I HATE that sound. It's the first thing I turn off on a new install, but it seems that no one else does, probably because they don't know how to. +10000000000 to just NOT having ANY sound by default.

agreed. 10 year olds (or any kid) do not need to be on line chattting to people.
