[Messenger] Antivirus (virus scanning) is required even for sending txt files

Submitted by litemininyuszika on March 16, 2009 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Usability

In Messenger 8, users had the ability to send any files without virus scanning. Messenger 9 now even restrict sending txt files without virus scanning!!

In meantime, here's a step-by step tutorial how to skip virus scanning:

Type exactly this text in Notepad:

@echo off
exit

Save the file as i.e. 1.bat somewhere, where it's not annoying to see it. You can also set Hidden attribute to this file.

In Messenger, navigate to Tools -> Options -> File Transfer.

Type the file's path in the "Scan for viruses using" input box. To ensure it will work, don't forget quotes.

Time is needed to create this file!

Notify users if they want to send files (but don't notify if it's just a txt file!!), provide a button (i.e. Continue) to continue with file transfer anyway, and add a 'Never show again' checkbox.

Just install it, a few seconds and it will not stress you anymore.

This option has been removed in Wave 4, primarily because the antivirus should have already scanned the file on-access, making the option redundant.
