Return icons and color to the UI (especially Windows Live Mail

Are you trying the Windows Live Mail Wave 4 beta that's out now?

I certainly like it a lot better than the Wave 3 version.

another way around emoticons

Or allow backspace to 'undo' the transformation into an emoticon.... just like Word.

But yes, an option is required. Give the user control.

[Windows Live Mail] Let users manage images images!

Wrote on March 8, 2010, 3:03am

Sad to see the screen caps of wave 4 that "Picture Emails" have been promoted into a first-class up front feature. Ugh. I hope this means I have to make a conscious effort to trigger this feature... if I just drag-n-drop or copy/paste an image into an email, I hope it just does the right and obvious thing, and doens't "switch" to being one of those confounded "picture emails".

Such a horrible, unintuitive, frustrating "feature". The ONLY way it should work is after I paste a picture in, I should be given the option to format it and change it into one of those "picture email" things... though god knows why anyone would ever want to. I've never figured out what the purpose is, or why anyone thinks this is a good idea.

[Windows Live Mail] Let users turn off emoticon substitution!

This is consistently my single biggest (DAILY!) annoyance with Windows Live Mail. Nine months in, and I still hate this, even though I've trained myself to hit Ctrl-Z. I really want to turn it off completely, but if it IS on, backspace should 'undo' it.

Hopefully the new "Ribbon" version of the UI will make this all a moot point. Fingers crossed for Wave 4...

Windows Live Contacts - full integration with Windows Contacts, Outlook/WinLive Mail contacts

Better yet, let me sync with 3rd party contact apps too, like Google Contacts.

[Live Mail desktop app] Right-click account to sync

Wrote on July 27, 2009, 9:09pm

I still think "sync" is too technical a term (my parents have no clue), and wonder what the heck was wrong for "Send/Receive Mail".

But that said, I agree, the option should be on a context menu when you right-click on the individual account.

Windows Live Mail: Stop limiting user formatting choices!

Wrote on June 23, 2009, 4:56am

Yeah. Limiting user choices doesn't always make a product easier to use. Sometimes it just makes it more frustrating to use.

Really, going to Windows LIve Mail shouldn't feel like going backwards from the ancient Outlook Express. Stop removing features that are useful (like specifying any font, and having a full compliment of character and paragraph formatting icons on the toolbar), and stop adding features that are annoying or that nobody really wants (like the stupid "picture mail" which is just frustrating as hell and I wouldn't miss at all if they dumped it and just restored the ability to simply imbed pictures directly, in a striaght forward manner, the way every other mail client in the world works).

Web based mail: If your going to have text labels, then have text labels

I'd rather all the interfaces restore the icons (use words + icons). "X" for delete, a printer icon, etc, etc. Best of both worlds.

Calendar and Contacts - separate Programs

Wrote on June 21, 2009, 4:40pm

I love the fact that you can get to Contacts and Calendar from within Windows Live Mail. That's great.

But I should be able to get to them directly as well! I agree with the idea being presented here... they should have at least the option of having separate entries to get directly to them, so they're not "hidden" behind the mail icon for users who don't think "If i want to add something to my calendar, first I have to open mail" in tuitively.

Windows Contacts should also be universal, not tightly wedded to Windows Live Mail. ANY application in the system should be able to utilize it! It should be the central repository for all my contacts and contact info... and with that in mind, I should also be able to sync iPhones and other moble devices to my Windows contacts, sync my Windows contacts to the MS Live Cloud (for access anywhere, from any web browser), etc. DItto the calendar!

I think it's important that all three of these applications be their own separate things, but with really good seemless integration with Windows Live Mail.

Import of contacts in CSV format is WAY too slow

Wrote on May 6, 2009, 3:53am

Just for the record: approx 4 hours to import 1180 contacts on a decent modern laptop with plenty of memory (3Gb, Vista 32-bit, Intel Core 2 Duo T6400 2.0 Ghz).

Ridiculous.

Windows Live Mail: allow import as well as export of accounts

Wrote on May 6, 2009, 1:27am

It's possible to import from the Tools->Accounts dialog, but it's a bit inconsistent an unintiutive to be unavailable from the File->Import menu.

Import of contacts in CSV format is WAY too slow

Wrote on May 6, 2009, 1:25am

It seems to be taking 8-9 seconds per contact at this point (about 650 contacts in, a little more than half-way, and over an hour into the import). It seems to be slowing down, getting slower and slower.

Also for the record, wlcomm.exe is taking about 10% of CPU.
