Windows Live Mail Usability

Submitted by pmbAustin on October 25, 2009 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Bug, Usability

I just upgraded to Win7, and as part of that, I exported my accounts and emails, and then imported after upgrading. The result of the import was very frustrating for many, many reasons.

1) While you can export accounts from the File menu, (more...)

Make the product work more consistently and intuitively: Make anything you can export from one place also avialable for import. Don't auto-sync on importing account settings, or at least provide a dialog with a checkbox so I can say "Don't (more...)

Windows Live Movie Maker: Preserve native resolution

Submitted by pmbAustin on October 25, 2009 to Annoyance, Usability

I had several small clips of video, all from the same source in the same format at the same resolution (500x288 if you must know). All I wanted to do was stitch them together into one clip.

Couldn't do it. Why? Because the only (more...)

Provide the ability to export in the native resolution. And while you're at it, having some preset "wide-screen" formats would be nice too, for portable devices, etc... you know, like Zune HD, iPhone, etc. But I should be able to specify (more...)

Return icons and color to the UI (especially Windows Live Mail

Submitted by pmbAustin on June 21, 2009 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Icons, Usability

In Wave 2, each button along the top tool bar had an associated icon, and folders along the left in the different accounts had different icons, and different accounts were in different color sets.

Please return this! It is MUCH easier (more...)

Bring back the icons in the toolbar buttons and in the folder/account pane on the left!

Windows Live Mail: Bring back ability to view source HTML

Submitted by pmbAustin on June 21, 2009 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Bug, Usability

In the old Outlook Express, you could turn on an advanced mode that would enable three tabs across the bottom... the editing tab (normal view), a preview tab (show email exactly as it will appear when sent), and a source tab (show the underlying HTML (more...)

Again, let the user be in control if they have the desire and knowledge. Please restore the ability to edit the HTML directly by adding an "advanced mode" that will turn on a "source" tab along the bottom of the editing window.

Windows Live Mail: Stop limiting user formatting choices!

Submitted by pmbAustin on June 21, 2009 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Bug, Usability

Windows Live Mail takes away so much from previous versions. For example, I used to be able to select any font size I wanted. Now I'm limited to half a dozen pre-selected font sizes. WHY? Let the user have control!

The toolbar (more...)

Let the user be in control, and stop trying to second-guess them or silently change their options! Let users select any font size they want, any color they want, any formatting they want! This is beyond annoying.

Import of contacts in CSV format is WAY too slow

Submitted by pmbAustin on May 6, 2009 to Annoyance, Bug, Usability

I bought a new laptop, so I wanted to copy over my Contacts. I exported them to CSV format on my old laptop, copied the file over, and impoted them on my new laptop. The UI is fairly straight-forward here.

However, I have over 1000 contacts. (more...)

Performance of contact import is unacceptable. Improve performance.

Windows Live Mail: allow import as well as export of accounts

Submitted by pmbAustin on May 4, 2009 to Annoyance, Usability

Windows Live Mail lets you export account settings. Which is great. But why doesn't it let you import them? I bought a new laptop, and exported all five of my email accounts on my old laptop, copied the *.IAF files over, and discovered there's (more...)

Ensure that anything you can export, you can import... and anything you can import, you can export. I should be able to share information and settings between two Windows Live Mail instances. Let people import account settings rather than having to (more...)

[Windows Live Mail] Keep "Not Junk" emails marked as unread

Submitted by pmbAustin on March 15, 2009 to Annoyance, Usability

Currnetly, if Windows Live Mail puts legitimate emails into the "Junk" folder, and you click the "not junk" button, it correctly moves the email back to the inbox... but even though it has not been read, it's marked as read. (more...)

When marking an email in the Junk Folder, ensure it's marked as "Unread" when moved into the inbox.

[Windows Live Mail] Let users manage images images!

Submitted by pmbAustin on March 7, 2009 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Usability

I absolutely hate the "Photo Email" feature. It robs me of any and all control, and never does what I want. The closest I can come to doing what I want is to save the image to disk (I can't just paste it in), and then select "Insert (more...)

1) Provide an option to "turn off" the "picture email" feature, so that all photos are inline at full size by default

2) Let it be an OPTION to enable users to format the picture in different ways (resize it, add captions, (more...)

[Windows Live Mail] Let users turn off emoticon substitution!

Submitted by pmbAustin on March 7, 2009 to Aesthetics, Annoyance, Usability

Currently, when typing in the body of an email, if you type ":-)", it's instantly converted into a graphic smilie face. There is no way to turn this off.

This is very annoying. I hate peppering my email text with distracting (more...)

1) Provide a configuration option to enable/disable the auto-substitution of graphic emoticons for text ones

2) Allow such auto-substitutions to be 'undone' with backspace, as well as Ctrl-Z, just like Outlook and Word.
