another way around emoticons

Wrote on March 11, 2010, 11:18pm

Note, however, that you can just hit Undo (Ctrl+Z) to turn the emoticon back into a plain text one.

But this isn't really discoverable, so you're right, this would be a good thing to have in the options menu, for example, a checkbox for "Use plain text for emoticons", turned off by default.

[Messenger] Provide "Send file again" button

It would be great if this appeared as a link beneath the file transfer, like with the "Accept" and "Ignore" links for incoming transfers.

Don't store IdentityCRL in Documents, use AppData\Roaming

It's quite annoying seeing this in my Windows 7 Documents library. What's worse is that this happens by default.

Outdated Hotmail favicon

These are all over the place on the various Live websites. Microsoft isn't renowned for its attention to "fit and finish", but you'd think they'd pay more attention to Hotmail, the most popular of them all.

Messenger Conversation Windows do not Display Previews Correctly

Wrote on November 9, 2009, 7:50pm

@Kit: I think Windows Vista/7's window previews, in general, can only be disabled by disabling desktop composition.
If you have Messenger Plus! Live's tabbed chats enabled, Windows Live Messenger's chat window previews will still work, assuming that you're not running in compatibility mode. If you are running in compatibility mode, you can go into Messenger Plus! Live's options and disable tabbed chats, which are the cause of the problems. You're right, this is a workaround, but I wouldn't call it unofficial since it's an option built into Messenger Plus! Live, and this is the program that's causing the problem -- not Windows Live Messenger itself.

@Kit: Thing is, this bug in Messenger Plus Live has been fixed for both Windows Vista and Windows 7. So if you're running it in Windows Vista compatibility mode, shouldn't it show up the way it does in Vista? By which I mean, fixed?

I should also note that, even with chat windows disabled and the latest version installed, this will *always* happen in Windows 7 if you have it set to run in compatibility mode. I can tell from your picture that you're using Vista, but just for the record.

Yeah, this is definitely a problem with Messenger Plus! Live. Try disabling tabbed chat windows, and/or upgrading to the latest version (4.82+).

I've got the same problem. I think it has to do with Messenger Plus! Live, which I see you're using too. Seems like MPL doesn't let Aero Shake work, either.

New Windows Live Messenger with SEND BUTTON

I didn't even notice that this was missing, since I always hit Enter anyway. So it's not really necessary, though I agree that this complicates things for touch users. I wasn't missing the Send button, but it never got in my way, either.
